KAKARIKI RELEASE
Published on 28-04-2010Email To Friend    Print Version

New Kakariki release at Tawharanui. IMG_7486.jpg

Fifty kakariki have been transfered from Hauturu (Little Barrier Island) to Tawharanui Open Sanctuary.  The birds were caught over three weeks by a team led by Massey University PhD candidate Luis Ortiz-Catedral and released in two batches on the 12th and 21st April.  It is hoped that these birds will form small flocks and stay at the sanctuary.  Ten of the released birds are carrying radio transmitters and are being monitored by Luis and a team of TOSSI volunteers.

Our thanks to Ransom Wines for their continuing support for the kakariki project and to the Lion Foundation for providing funds for this release.  Thanks also to the catch team and to DOC and Hauturu supporters for approving and supporting the project.  Luis' work is supported by the Rotary Club in Newmarket.
