Tawharanui Marine Reserve
Published on 01-12-2010Email To Friend    Print Version

The Marine Park at Tawharanui is to become New Zealand's 34th Marine Reserve.  The Reserve will replace the existing Marine Park with some modifications to the northern (seaward) boundary.Tawharanui is a fantastic coastal area, renowned for its beauty, and is very popular for swimming and snorkelling. The new reserve will protect a great diversity of fish and other marine life along with extensive coastal reefs. The decision to create the reserve was made after an application from the Auckland Regional Council was approved by the Minister of Conservation Kate Wilkinson and the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Phil Heatley. The Tawharanui Marine Reserve will be gazetted under the Marine Reserves Act to preserve areas for the scientific study of marine life where they are of such significance that their continued preservation is in the national interest.
